Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Are you surfin’ the chia wave yet?  I know lots of folks have been chewing on chia for years, but I only recently had my first chia pudding.  I dug it.  My lateness to the chia game is crazy, because I’m a big fan of wobbly, chewy things–especially in my beverages.  I am one of the biggest bubble tea cheerleaders, ever.  In the world.

Chia and tapioca shouldn’t really be compared, though.  They’re very different animals.  Or at least, my comparisons shouldn’t be taken too seriously…Boba/tapioca reminds me of candy and desserts, squishy boobs and the age-old adage, “CHEW BEFORE SWALLOW!” Chia, on the other hand is a much smaller and delicate choking concern and more reminiscent of frog eggs than breasts.  I’m not alone in this sentiment either, just read Vegtastic Voyage‘s hilarious experience with her first “chia in kombucha.”  Her story is replete with frog egg pictures, which I’ll be kind enough to leave off of my message today.

Chia is also an insane nutrition power-donkey, and if you get bored with eating it, you can spread it on objects around your house and grow it for novelty!  I wish bubble tea had the same virtues.

From left to rightL Raspberry Passion, Cranberry Lemonade, Cherry Lime and Blackberry Hibiscus

The generous folks at Mamma Chia heard about my recent chia conversion and were nice enough to send me coupons to try each of their four flavors.  These classy drinks are filled with organic juice, organic chia and a little bit of agave.  They’re super-healthy, refreshing, have a bit of protein (4g per serving), omega-3s, and they’re fun to eat or drink (you can’t really drink a beverage you need to chew, and you can’t really eat a drink–so that’s confusing).  After sampling each of these very scientifically in my test kitchen, my favorite flavor, far and away, was Cherry Lime.  It’s tastes like cherry jello and required considerable restraint from me and my lab partner  to keep from adding vodka straight into the bottle.

Mamma Chia wants to spread their chewy, healthy love with you, too. Today we’ll pick three winners;  each of you will win a coupon for a free bottle of Mamma Chia (you pick the flavor), plus another coupon for a buck off of two bottles.

To win, just comment with your best chia alliteration, write about your general love of chia, or if you have any experience incorporating chia with booze, tell me about that.  Winners will be chosen at midnight tonight–East Coast time, so that’s 9PM for you lefties.

The winners are alliteraters Emily comment #18, Candice comment #39 and Beth comment #51.  Please email veganmofoblog at gmail dot com and send us your addresses!

  1. Wow – chia drinks?! I have only had a little chia exposure so far – mixing it into my soy-yogurt with maple and pumpkin. I do LOVE bubble tea (which I can never find fresh in my area!), so this drinkable version of chia sounds intriguing. Would love to give it a try. 🙂

  2. I’ve been in love with chia as an egg replacer for years and have only recently become acquainted with its power-food benefits (I add it to protein shakes and salads). But chia in a bottled beverage?! I’m definitely intrigued. 🙂

  3. YES!!!!!!!!!!! I need more of this in my life!

I fell in love with chia seed kombucha in Seattle and then got other people to love (or hate) it at Vida Vegan Con. This stuff is magical. It’s like squishy little magic bubbles in your mouth and I WANT IT IN MINE.

There was an all-out chia seed kombucha battle on Twitter last night and I stand strong with #TeamChiaSeedKombucha (even though I just learned yesterday that Mama Chia is juice, not kombucha). Even though John of Laziest Vegans said he would puke all over me if I made him try drinking chia seed kombucha, deep down I know he’ll love it so he should be a winner too!

I’ve tried the Cranberry Lemonade flavor of Mama Chia and I think Cherry Lime is up next!

  4. I haven’t tried out chia yet either because where to buy it from is so confusing! I’ve looked at Amazon and I can buy it from the ‘health’ section, for much cheaper, or the ‘grocery’ section for more. Why is the ‘health’ section cheaper? And why does that bag look sketch? So many questions!
I am anxious to try it out as one of my favorite blogs, Oh She Glows, uses it all. the. time.
Just tell a girl where to buy it! Puhleeze!

  5. I adore these. I’ve tried two flavors but I’m greedy enough to want to win because my budget doesn’t allow me to buy these regularly.

  6. Mama Chia looks like I might like it
I love bubble tea so I’ll try it.
    Chia grows on terra cotta
    Quite well, but I gotta
Admit that I never did buy it.

Haven’t tried eating chia, but I did get a chia pet as a gift when I was growing up. I don’t think that counts. I saw this in the stores the other day, I had no idea what to make of it. Would like to give it a try.

  7. I’ve never tried chia before, but I would definitely be interested in changing that. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  8. I haven’t tried chia but I would love to try this drink. Chewing and drinking at the same time sounds like fun.

  9. Chew ch-ch-ch-chia makes me ckeeky. Not cheeky enough to cha cha, but enough to get out of my chair and chase down more change to spend on Mama Chia. Cha-Ching!

  10. I Adore Chia seeds already. I’ve only made ChiaEgg once and mom and I splurged on two of these drinks on my birthday lunch at Whole Foods. They were delish and our flavor reminded me of Hibiscus Tea we use to make. Thank You for new lush products 🙂

  11. Oh geez, I don’t have anything amazingly clever to say..all I can say is that I’ve become a commercial for chia, and all of my friends get me to do things buying me chia beverages. I got to enjoy one for breakfast just for feeding bunnies and kittens this morning! Mmmmmm.

  12. Chewy ch-ch-ch-chia makes me ckeeky. Not cheeky enough to cha cha, but enough to get out of my chair and chase down more change to spend on Mama Chia. Cha-Ching!

  13. I have never tried chia before! I really want to though – I look at it every time im in whole foods and then I sigh and pass it up because I’m broke. I saw these drinks there – I would love to try the cherry lime!

  14. I’ve actually never heard of Chia, although these drinks sound great. And alliterations? My name is Chelsea (I’m a great “choice”…). I guess if I started drinking it all the time you could call me “chewy cheeky chesty it might grown hair on your… Chelsea” ? ooooii

  15. Wow, this caught my attention! I’ve never seen a “drink” like this before, and I am intrigued. I’d love to try the cherry lime, that sounds tasty!

  16. Chia is the best. When I know I have to work late the next day, I put a couple of tablespoons in a glass of water, cover it, and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning it’s all gooey and gelatinous and delicious. I add a little bit of lemon juice and stevia for a delicious chia fresca. Perfect. But please don’t enter me into the contest because the coupons would be useless for me – this brand isn’t available round here. 🙂

  17. I’ve only used chia in over night oats and banana scrambles. I think it would be interesting to try in a drink!

  18. Chia is crazy!!! Who knew, when we were kids and trying to grow chia cats and dogs, that we’d be eating the stuff later? And that it would be HEALTH food? Too bad Play-Doh also didn’t turn out to be health food because I ate my fair share of that. These drinks look nuts! I wanna try them.

  19. Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia chaotically churns between my cheeks as I contemplate the curiously charming consistency.

  20. Chia with liquor is what they drink in _Born to Run_, and then they run…like 100 miles. Can’t say it gives me that kind of energy, but I love the wiggly stuff. I bring it to my students to try; we mix it in apple juice and wait for it to get goopey. Mamma Chia is sexy stuff to drink!

  21. Chester the chimpanzee, cheerful cheetah chewer, chases cheater cheetahs on chariots. Chia chasers are champions, not chariot cheaters.

  22. I’ve honestly never tried chia before, and actually never heard about it until now. It sounds delicious and I can’t wait to try it for the first time, I’m going to have to look into this more!

  23. nothing I eat is safe from “I wonder what chia would taste like on/ in this? & I loved discovering that I could make chia milk (has someone done that before? Back off. I discovered it.) BUT I NEVER THOUGHT OF CHIA BUBBLE TEA. I love bubble tea! Greatest. Idea. Ever.
