When I was trying to decide who to contact about giveaways based on what I thought people would be most interested in winning, Cookin’ Crunk immediately sprung to mind. Not just because Bianca is a popular and well liked vegan blogger, but because I have been hearing rumblings about this book for what seems like years. If you’ve read her blog for awhile, you’ve seen posts referencing ‘my upcoming book’ for awhile, so I think it’s safe to say that Cookin’ Crunk has been a highly anticipated book!

If you don’t know, the most widely accepted definition of ‘crunk’ is ‘to get excited’ (it’s also used as a synonym for getting drunk and/or high, but please do not try to smoke this book). I haven’t had a chance to pick up a copy yet, but after following Vegan Crunk for over a year and seeing pictures of a lot of the dishes featured in the book, I am definitely excited to get my hands on some authentic vegan southern recipes! For an in-depth review, Joni has you covered. If you can’t wait to win a copy, you can pick it up at your local bookstore or on the publisher’s website!

Book Publishing Co. has offered to send one lucky reader a copy of Cookin’ Crunk! To enter, simply comment here, telling me what your favorite (vegan) southern dish is. This one is open to US and Canada, because I am so late putting it up I will draw a winner tomorrow, October 16th, at 6 pm EST.

And while you’re at it, why don’t you go on over to Vegan Crunk and check out Bianca’s sandwichy MoFo theme and wish her happy birthday?

  1. Having grown up in the midwest and now moved to the west coast, I don’t have a clue about southern cooking. I need this cookbook to introduce me!

  2. I have to give credit to the Chicago diner in Chicago for my favorite southern grub, their biscuits n’ gravy is insane in the membrane!

  3. My favorite vegan dish has to be a simple sweet potato pie after dinner (it’s the season!) or maybe pumpkin pie! (any type of pie really 🙂 )

  4. I love collard greens! Steamed or sautéed in coconut oil with onions and garlic. And eggplant bacon. Yummmmm

  5. I’d say biscuits and sausage gravy, but I’ve yet to find a vegan version that satisfies my craving. Maybe it’s in this book??? : )

  6. I have to say either New Orleans beans and rice or spicy collard greens. Until I became vegan I’d never tried either one. Now I’m always looking for new southern recipes.

  7. Hands down, it’s gonna be crispy and moist cornbread with corn kernels in there. I like to whip up some cinnamon honey butter to serve it with. Bread pudding is a close, close second.

  8. Comet Cafe’s chicken-fried-seitan is awesome, but Maxine’s Southern Comfort’s smoked BBQ tofu with mashed, corn bread, and vegetables is amazing! (Both in Milwaukee)

I love making homemade vegan jambalaya as well!

  9. There’s nothing like some good southern style soul food! We like too cook up collard greens, with mac n cheese, and barbecued textured vegetable protein!

  10. I have been waiting for this book for SO LONG!! I was so excited when I saw that it was finally coming out! As for my favorite southern style dish, I love okra, rattlesnake snap beans, and potato chunks tossed in cornmeal with spices, and fried up. I ate it about once a week this summer, with fresh okra and beans from my garden. Yum!

  11. Red beans and rice!

There are a lot of good options though, it’s kind of hard to pick. For example, those would be a toss up with cajun spiced… anything. 🙂

  12. I love the southern fried tofu at Souley Vegan in Oakland, CA, along with their fried okra, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese and greens. I’d love to learn to make that kind of stuff at home, so this cookbook would be great! :o)

  13. Can I say something I haven’t even made yet? I’m dying to veganize my mom’s chicken-fried steak… now that I have a killer beefy-style seitan recipe it’s just a matter of time…

  14. I can’t deny a well made bean burrito. Red peppers, black beans, corn, salsa, all wrapped up in a spinach tort, and some butternut squash soup on the side. That takes me back home to Texas.

    Happy Birthday!

  15. I’m Southern, so that’s like asking a crazy cat lady who her favourite cat is. I guess my favourite thing to cook for myself is biscuits and gravy, but one of the best Southern meals I ever had was a plate at Rosetta’s Kitchen that contained sauteed greens, for which I bought a slice of cornbread to sop up the pot likker.

  16. My (vegan) boyfriend is from rural Alabama, and we’re now obsessed with finding legit southern vegan food here in California (his standards are unsurprisingly higher than mine). My favorite vegan southern food is southern fried (cornflake-breaded) tofu cutlets with vegan tartar sauce. Soulely Vegan in Oakland makes the best I’ve ever had, and mine never turn out quite right. Maybe this book can save me from my Minnesota roots and teach me how to make proper collards and cornflake cutlets? Good gracious, I hope so.

  17. Fresh cornbread right out of the oven! Being a lifelong vegetarian and now vegan, I’ve never truly experienced southern food. Would love to veganize commonly non-vegan southern dishes.

  18. Since my Southern cooking is pretty much limited to cornbread experimentation, I clearly need to expand my repertoire!

  19. Pecan pie. It has long been a family favorite, as my grandma, then grandpa after she passed, and later my aunt would bake them for holidays. I attempted my first vegan pecan pie last year and it was great. My Mississippi-born husband agreed!

  20. I want to find my favorite southern dish in VEGAN CRUNK! At the moment, I would have to say Collard Greens — if only I had an awesome vegan cornbread to go with them ….

  21. That would have to be okra, fresh out of my garden – tossed with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt. I could eat that daily! Failing that – biscuits and gravy, for sure.

  22. I’ve been making vegan drop biscuits every day for the past few weeks. No real reason. So biscuits are apparently my Southern fave.

  23. Oufff…my favourite south vegan food…hummm…I would say collard greens. I also like the vegan hopping john and meals with okra in it. I would really appreciate to win a copy of her book. A friend of mine is really enjoying her copy.
    Thanks for that contest.

  24. Oh man, chicken-fried anything that isn’t actually, you know, chicken. Or biscuits. Chicken-fried thing on a biscuit. Boom.

  25. Grits! I just recently learned how awesome they are, since I never ate them growing up and really had no idea what they were all about. Now I’m making up for lost time!

  26. I live in New Orleans, a city famous for its food. I have had different types of vegan po boys and gumbos, I even make my own vegan king cake for Mardi Gras, but there are so many traditional foods to be made vegan friendly: dirty rice, boudain, étouffée, etc. The vegan lifestyle is really starting to become popular, it would be nice to have this cookbook to utilize the local produce and flavors that already participate in New Orleans cuisine.

  27. Grits, grits, and more grits! Oh, I hope I win this book. I’ve been following Bianca’s blog for years and I really want to get my hands on this cookbook! I’m sure the recipes are amazing! And I’m a Southern gal, so I really need it to help me please my omnivore extended Southern family during the upcoming holidays.

  28. Chicken-fried tofu with a biscuit on the side. My dad’s side of the family is from Alabama, so I’m always looking for new Southern recipes to try out on them.

  29. Southern BBQ fried Tempeh with a side of collard greens and pumpkin corn bread muffins! So comforting. Great thing: you feed vegan babes vegan food and they love it. My Eldest daughter was asked by our Georgia born friend what her fave food was – collard greens! Needless to say he was impressed.

  30. Plain ol’ Grits. I know that doesn’t sound as adventurous or detailed as southern BBQ tempeh with a side of sauteed collard greens or butternut squash pecan topped macaroni with kale… BUT , plain ol’ grits it is. Pure and Simple.

  31. Oh, do I want to win this! My “Last Meal” would be spicy mixed greens, black-eyed peas, biscuits and cornbread, fried okra, and peach cobbler for dessert. But if I had to pick a single favorite Southern food? Mississippi caviar, hands down. (That’s black-eyed pea salad with tomatoes, onions, and jalapeno.)

  32. Mmmmm, I don’t think I could choose a favorite. Fried green tomatoes, biscuits and gravy, vegan gumbo, hoppin’ john, cornbread, and peach blackberry cobbler. Give me all that and I would die happy.

  33. Greens flavored with vegan ‘meat’ and a big ol’ pot of beans flavored the same way. And a cast iron skillet full of jalapeno cornbread. This book is in my Amazon wishlist. Please please please I want it so bad! I think it would help the final conversion of the not-quite-but-almost-convinced man in the house! Thank you!

  34. I live in super-rural CA, so, I really don’t know anything but faux-southern food. (a reason to get this book on the top of my must-have list, perhaps?)

But, at the end of the summer, I do a lot of fried green tomatoes – in sandwiches, topped with red sauce, plain… I think they’re my favourite.

  35. Fried “chicken,” greens (collards, kale and mustard) with pickles and hot sauce, mac ‘n “cheese” and sweet potato pun!

Deep fried okra and okra soup are yummy too!

  36. Southern Cooking is awesome! How can I choose my favorite? Cornbread, biscuits, mac and cheese, greens. it’s all good!

  37. My favorite Southern vegan dish is Hoppin’ John especially with cornbread and gravy. Love the mix of my own gluten-free sausage, black-eyed peas and collards. Yum!!!

  38. As a newcomer to the vegan world my favorite vegan dish is burritos made with tempeh, portabello and other veggies.

  39. Favorite southern dish? Talk about easy question. Biscuits and gravy! I like sausage gravy, but I’ll settle for a simple white gravy, too.
