Winners!

Lisa Marie: The vegan food gift I’d most like to receive is a trip back to NYC for dinner at Candle 79. Does that count? I really miss that place. :(

I’d really like The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet. I’ve had it on my wishlist for a while.

Veronica: There’s a few things I’d like but I really need a tofu press! Hearty Vegan Meals for Monster appetites would be best for me, I have a 13 year old who plays baseball & football and he definitely has a monster appetite!

If I had to describe Joni’s recipe style to someone who was unfamiliar with her, i’d probably say “Girl doesn’t mess around.” My impression of Joni is that she isn’t interested in putting out a book that isn’t designed to knock some socks off. There is no recreating the tofu scramble, or jumping on the latest health trend to cash in. Her love of comfort food combined with Celine Steen’s creative use of ingredients created one of the best vegan cookbooks of all time, Hearty Vegan Meals For Monster Appetites. Unapologetically decadent, it is the book to pull out when you really need to wow someone.

Long before she hooked up with Celine, Joni had self-published her own book and was working on a veggie burger book for years. Good things come to those who wait, I know when I got my copy I thought, “How can anyone come up with 100 veggie burger recipes and not just repeat themselves?” If you have the book, you know that Joni took things that you would never think of making into a patty and did it.

Her new book (number six!), Vegan Gifts just came out. I can’t tell you much about it since I don’t have it, but I can tell you that Kurt Halsey (tween fan girl squee) illustrated it, and if you look at Joni’s flickr account, you can see pictures of many of the recipes. Mixes, cookies, snacks, and canned goods galore! I know every year I struggle to think of new food gifts to give people (also I always end up eating half of those buckeye ball myself), so I personally can’t wait to get my hands on it. I wrote a guide to vegan cookbooks on my blog a few months ago, and one of the points I mentioned for buying a new book is, does it fill a hole in my collection? The answer here is a big YES. And with Celine taking the photos, you know it’s just as nice as the books she’s done with Joni.

But if you don’t want to take my word for it, why don’t we just give you a book for funsies?

Joni has offered up a copy each of three of her books today, Hearty Vegan Meals, The Best Veggie Burgers On The Planet, and Vegan Gifts. Please say which book you would like so you don’t win one you already have (if you’d be happy with any, feel free to say so as well). Simply comment here, telling us what vegan food gift you’d most like to receive for [winter holiday that you celebrate/refuse to participate in]. Three winners will be picked tomorrow morning at 11 am CST, US only (we have UK and Aussie only giveaways coming, don’t worry!).

  1. I’d be thrilled to add any of these books to my collection! : )

  2. The vegan food gift I would most like to receive? Anything I don’t have to make. Why do I have to make everything? Would it kill someone to make me something? Okay. An assortment of cookies, but only a few of each so I don’t go crazy. Something molasses-y, something pumpkin-y, and some spritz cookies.

  3. Cyn says:

I’d like either Hearty Vegan Meals or The Best Veggie Burgers.

    2. Someone else making the centerpiece loaf for Thanksgiving (vegan and gluten-free, please).

Monster appetites?!? Woo! I would like that for thanksgiving, because I have a minimum of 25 people to feed and everything is vegan except for my husbands stupid ham that gets cooked out in a snow bank using an extension cord and a nesco roaster. I need good mash recipes, STAT, they’re going to start mutiny over the lack of dairy-laden fat potatoes! Help!

  25. Alissa says:

I’d love to get any of the books, but especially the Monster Appetite so I could cook for my vegan friend who does ultra bike races. And the gift I’d love to get is vegan chocolate truffles… truffles-a-day by mail? I don’t know if that exists but it would be awesome.

Vegan Hearty meals seems most appealing to me; I like the ‘home style’ in the description.

I was shocked to discover that there is not a single official blogger from the US for Vegan MoFo. Could this possibly be true? I am motivated to join next year just becase of this! And I did not know that I could join by commenting on vegan foods in supermarkets and on other topics, (and did not ahve to make 20 RECIPES during the month). Now I am highly motivated!

    Thanks
    Veena (California)

I know it’s not food, but my friend and I both make vegan soap (that’s right the good stuff with lye). It smelled sooooo tasty!

  103. Emily says:

A vitamix. Sigh. I would love to have Hearty Vegan Meals. Yum.

  118. veganlisa says:

I’d love a copy of vegan food gifts – and some home made vegan Baileys this holiday season.

    xo

  119. Rithika says:

I’d love to receive any of those books! They all look amazing!
Winter is my favorite time of the year. A vegan food gift that I look forward to receiving is a jar full of raw chocolate truffles and a new lens for my camera! :)

  120. I would kill (OK, not really because that wouldn’t be very vegan of me) to win “Hearty Vegan Meals” because I HAD a copy and had only made about three (AMAZING) recipes but had about 100 more bookmarked that I wanted to try – THEN, brilliant me, I loaned it out to a friend who wanted to impress her vegetarian boyfriend,- HA! – and now my “FRIEND” just can’t seem to find it – AND she moved across country so I KNOW I’ll never see it again. ::POUTS::

  121. Heather B. says:

I would love a tofu press, and to go with it I’d be absolutely delighted with any of the three books!

  122. Rachel says:

Vegan chocolate truffles (which I make anyway every year around the holidays), hands down! Any book looks good to me :)

  123. Jenny says:

Any of them! & I really need a food processor!

  124. The vegan food gift I’d most like to receive is a trip back to NYC for dinner at Candle 79. Does that count? I really miss that place. :(

I’d really like The Best Veggie Burgers on the Planet. I’ve had it on my wishlist for a while.

  125. Kelly says:

I would SUPER love to get some fudge. I haven’t had it since before I transitioned to veganism, which was a couple years after my mother’s best friend passed away. She made fudge every Christmas and always sent over a tin. I have an aunt who makes it every year, too, and I go without, as I’ve never found a recipe to use. I fear the knowledge of fudge recipes, for when I learned how to make my own marizpan, TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPENED. As in, eating it all. So, I’d love to have it as a gift so it was a finite supply, and I would super duper amazingly appreciate it.

  126. Mari says:

I would like to win any of the books! For sure the food gift I most love to receive is home baked goods, like brownies or cookies. I also have a friend who makes me chocolate/white chocolate covered pretzels every year that are sooo good!

  127. Kathy says:

I don’t have any of her books. I would love to add one to my Vegan repertoire though!!! If I had to choose it might be the Vegan Gifts =)

  128. Hmm… definitely some homemade vegan marshmallows made with marshmallow roots. Bonus points if the marshmallow roots were grown in a personal garden. That would be the most awesome present ever for… winter festivus. ;D

(As for books in the contest, I don’t have any of these and would be glad to receive any of them)

    Happy Vegan Mofo-ing, everyone. :3

  129. Mollie bailey says:

I would like Hearty Vegan Meals or The Best Veggie Burgers On The Planet if I’m chosen.

I think I would like good kitchen tools. I know not necessarily a vegan food gift, but I’m starting over after divorce and need to replace a few things(a new food processor, a KitchenAid mixer, oh and a small deli slicer to slice seitan for sandwiches)!!

If I had to pick something food related, it would be the seitan recipe from Melt Eclectic Deli in Cincinnati, Ohio. I just haven’t been able to make my own seitan with good flavor.

  130. Lori says:

Oh my gosh, Hearty Meals please! I have been wanting this one for so long now but as a full-time student, I have to be very judicious in how I spend my pennies.

  131. Gina says:

I would love any of the three cookbooks! Vegan food gift? I would love to receive an assortment of gourmet nut cheeses and wine!!!

I want to win Vegan Food Gifts, I have the other two :)

  135. Lorien Mahay says:

I would love the Vegan Food Gifts book!!! My favorite food gift to receive? Vegan marshmallows or caramels. I get all weepy just thinking about it!

  136. Rebecca B says:

I would love any of the 3 books. Preparing for Thanksgiving and want to impress with delicious food.

New to vegan cooking, so I need to add any and all good books to my non-existent collection!

  138. Heidi says:

  139. Haley says:

I’d be happy to win any – I actually have the ‘hearty vegan meals’ checked out from the library right now :)

  140. Jordyn says:

I don’t have any of these, but the gifts and the hearty appetite books look AMAZING. I too always look to see what kinds of food gifts go give during holiday times. I have an omni husband with a hearty appetite, so a good cookbook would definitely be appreciated!

  141. Crysta Jar says:

I would love to be entered to win the Hearty Vegan Meals book!

i don’t know if this is specifically “vegan”, but i would love to get a spiralizer. and i would LOVE to get vegan food gifts!

  146. VeganNurseTim says:

I would be happy to receive any of the 3 books..the gift that I would like to receive is not tangible…it is the gift that I know I improved someone’s eating habits for the better by introducing vegan meals into their diet!

  147. Amanda says:

I’d be happy to win any of these. Note that Joni and I aren’t related (same last name). :-) I’ll take any vegan/GF gift for Christmas. At the top of the list would be holiday cookies!

  148. Edie says:

favorite vegan food gift: fried donuts
I’d like the vegan food gifts book.

  149. Edie says:

I’d like the vegan food gift book.

  150. veganlinda says:

For a vegan gift I would love to convince my MS doctor that eating this way works better than drugs! Food is medicine!

The Best Veggie Burgers On The Planet looks awesome!

  156. Laura says:

I’d love to win Vegan Food Gifts or Hearty Vegan Meals…I have the veggie burger book and have made some great stuff from it.

  157. I’ll take any vegan food gift! What jumps out right now though is a basket of assorted vegan artisan cheeses — something I don’t ever get to sample. As for which of the books, it’s hard to decide, they all look wonderful! But with the upcoming gift-giving season, Vegan Food Gifts sounds extra beneficial :)

  158. Caitlin says:

My ideal vegan food gift would be like, an entire case of Justin’s peanut butter cups. Or Cleo’s. Really any Reese’s facsimile.

  159. Michelle says:

I would love for someone to make me cookies! Or candy. Or pickled things. Or a hot cocoa mix. Basically anything!

    Would love Vegan Food Gifts!

  160. holly says:

I would love to win the “The Best Veggie Burger of the planet”, I have been trying new recipes this summer, and I would love to continue even during this Fall & Winter season! A Veggie Burger a day and I would blog about it all :)

A Vegan food gift? I would love a dehydrator, you hear this mum? Or a jar of savoury Maple syrup! There’s nothing like a homemade of Maple syrup from home [Canada]! I love this time time of year!

    Wish me luck!

  161. Kim says:

Any type of vegan mail-order baked good or chocolates that I haven’t already tried would be a great present. I have the veggie burger book (so good!), so either of the other two books would be great!

  162. AmberDawn says:

    Any book would be marvelous!
Vegan gift – dinner of some sort or bake me some cupcakes!

    with 2 minutes to spare!

  163. Jessie says:

I would LOVE to win a copy of “The Best Veggie Burgers On The Planet” – I always have trouble making good ones, and burgers are one of my favorite foods! Best food present ever would definitely be raw dark chocolates… they’re just so flippin’ tasty. :)

  164. Genevieve says:

All of those great. I would love to get vegan cookies and fudge for Christmas. Last year for Christmas I gave non-vegan people vegan cupcakes and they loved them.

  165. Veronica says:

this is super exciting on a Friday. Got my wisdom tooth pulled today and then I see this. So awesome! Thank you!

  166. Ha, I realized that I’ll be making some recipes from another one of her books, Cozy Inside. For some reason it only just now clicked. I blame it on the chaos that is veganmofo.

  167. Catlyn says:

I would be happy with any of these books, they look fantastic! :)
