GIVEAWAY: Salad Samurai by Terry Hope Romero

GIVEAWAY: Salad Samurai by Terry Hope Romero

This Giveaway is now Closed
Salad SamuraiWhen you are a vegan people ask you the same annoying questions over and over (ie Do you eat chicken?). But if you are a vegan that doesn’t like salad, let me tell you from first hand knowledge, that you are going to have some serious ‘splainin’ to do. People look at you, aghast, “But what do you eat???”.

Well folks, with this amazing new book by Terry Hope Romero I can easily answer now with salads like “Spring Herb Salad with Maple Orange Tempeh, or Deviled Kale Caesar Salad or Seared Garlic Chickpeas, Spinach, and Farro”. Terry’s book is full of recipes that I would actually not just eat but completely enjoy. The book has so many dressings like Chia Chipotle Dressing and toppings like Curried Cashew Pepita Crunch that you can add to any old boring salad you make to make it awesome too! Proteins like that 70’s tofu have been huge hits over on the PPK. And it’s arranged seasonally so you won’t be trying to use so-called “tomatoes” in the dead of winter. I am a salad hater no more! Here is a great and thorough review from Vegan Eats and Treats if you want to learn more and see tons of pictures.

Now if you want to win a copy from one the greatest vegan authors of our time you must have a US or Canada address, fill in your email, and answer me this question in the next 24 hours. What is the one thing that you like to add to any salad that will make it pop? Extra Rule! You can not answer with anything that someone ahead of you has already said. SO if the first comment is “Olives” you bet your ass you better not answer olives. Unless you want to lose!

Tuesday Round-up: Ready to Rumble

Tuesday Round-up: Ready to Rumble

I always learn a ton of things during veganmofo and find so much inspiration from other blogs. It’s amazing how everyone has the same parameters, write about vegan food every day for a month, and then takes it in so many different directions. For example, some people come up with themes like The Miss Kitchen Witch Recipe Blog doing Harry Potter inspired recipes every day. Today her Mrs. Weasley’s Vegan Bacon Butties looked pretty much to die for.baconbutty5blog

On of my most favorite things is seeing dishes prepared in ways that I am unfamiliar with and I’ve pretty much only seen jackfruit as a fruit or a meat sub so it was super cool to see this dish, Jukut Nangka, from Bali. VegFusion says that it’s “a local dish which is slow cooked young jackfruit with local spices and beans, served with red and white rice.”

Jukut Nangka

I love seeing new ways to use ingredients that I make the same way every single time. In this case, these Maple Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Butternut Squash sound delightful and festive. I love sweet roasted vegetables and I bet the coconut bacon adds a lot.

Some dishes I see just make me swoon, not literally, I don’t know if I’ve ever literally swooned but I think you’ll know what I mean when you see these Chilean Panqueques con manjar or Crepes with Dulce de Leche in English from Vegan Sweet and Simple. It’s the kind of food you want to marry.

Panqueques-con-manjar-2-1024x765And finally, I love new ways to get more chocolate into my diet AND Earl Grey Tea so I can embrace my inner Captain Picard. I wish I could embrace the outer Captain Picard…and these truffles.

Hope you all still have your mofo mojo! Only 7 days to go!

Giveaway – Vegusto

Giveaway – Vegusto

This giveaway is now closed. Congrat’s to Matt!

It’s no secret that I love, love, love vegan cheese. Hell, it’s made up the majority of my own MoFo this year and I keep writing cheese based round ups. My cheese love is out there in the world! Vegusto are one of my favourite brands as they make the kind of delicious cheese you can eat straight up on a cracker at a fancy cheese and wine party. If anyone would like to invite me to one of those I’m totally available. I’ll bring the Vegusto.

Vegusto, who hand make their products in Switzerland, don’t just make cheese though they also make my absolute favourite vegan sausages as well as burgers, sandwich slices, luncheon rolls and steaks. Today they’ve teamed up with us to offer one lucky UK based winner a £20 voucher (excluding postage) to spend on whatever they’d like in the online store.

Screen Shot 2014-08-12 at 07.47.12

To be in with a chance of winning just leave a comment below by 8pm GMT tomorrow letting us know which Vegusto product you’d be most excited about purchasing with your voucher. Please be sure to leave a valid contact e-mail address so that we can contact you if you win. The winner will be randomly selected and announced after the giveaway has ended. This competition is open to residents of the UK only.

Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese

Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese

If you’d asked me before I went vegan what my favourite food was I would have said cheese. If you asked me now I’d probably still say cheese, just vegan of course. All of the deliciousness but with none of the heart wrenching guilt my vegetarian self was dealing with on the daily. The round up I wrote last week was focussed on this true love of mine and uh, so is this week’s, so sue me. Please don’t sue me, I have a problem m’kay?!

This first post comes from Laura at Abracapocus who wrote this seriously helpful round up of Atlanta’s vegan friendly restaurants. As a traveller I loved to amass this info, I never know where I’ll end up one day! Everything from the tofu spring rolls to the chimichanga look amazing but it was this pizza from Ammazza that really grabbed me. They make their own cashew cheese! Book me on the next flight to Atlanta, stat.

IMG_0918Whilst we’re travelling around the Southern states fellow vegan travel blogger Vegan Nom Noms hit up one of my favourite pizza spots Via 313 in Austin today. Via 313 make Detroit style pizza which is kinda like a well-oiled, crispy-crusted, deep dish ‘za. If you’ve never tried it you need to. Nicole ordered the Herbivore with vegan cheese – Follow Your Heart in this case (one of my fave’s for any melty situaton) and added extra arugula, or rocket as I would try to call it!

IMG_4199-300x225Coincidentally also located in the south is MoFo blogger The Veg Abides who wrote an epic round up of her favourite frozen vegan pizzas today. As a self confessed junk food lover she’s clearly a grrl after my own heart and I only wish there were six (yes SIX!) types of vegan frozen pizza in the UK. I think we have two. Maybe three. And only one has cheese. FML!

tofurky-pizzasEasy Vegan are killing it again and again with the Carbs and Rec theme and today’s post is no exception. Today they blew my mind with this DEEP DISH MAC & CHEESE PIZZA. Yes. DEEP DISH. Sorry for shouting but OMFG! I made mac & cheese pizza for my birthday this year because it’s my dream food and deep dish didn’t even cross my mind. I feel like I need to hand over my mac & cheese lovers pizza crown!

15124523247_a20201a6d7My pal Lindsay from Vegan Chai made one of my favourite ever mac and cheeses, the Roasted Red Pepper Mac & Cheese from Isa Does It, for Mac & Cheese Monday. She upped the pasta (just like I always do!) because pasta’s awesome and this recipe makes a whole lot of sauce. If it looks as good to you as it tastes to us the recipe’s online here, thanks Isa.

15318023432_8c1d18ecd9Jenny from Man nennt mich Öko has the right idea about Mondays and she whipped up this gorgeously creamy looking cashew based mac & cheese for her Mac & Cheese Monday post. There are even vegetables hiding in the sauce so if you’re that way inclined this might just be the mac for you.

Nordamerika_A+(2)Lastly this cartoon from Kale Crusaders made me smile when I spotted it this morning. Nooch is my jam y’all. Every day during MoFo Kale Crusaders have been posting a cartoon that fits their theme, Vegan Faux Show, including a chickpea flour omelette and ten different kinds of plant based bacon! Each cartoon includes links to the recipe (or recipes) that inspired it. Such fun!

Mac & NoochI hope everyone’s had a wonderful Monday and don’t forget to keep on MoFoing, we’re nearing the finish line and the team are already busy franticly compiling list upon list of blogs, blog posts and cats (for our personal collections!) for this years MoFies, our amazing online awards ceremony. With prizes this year! You gotta be in it to win it!

Vegan MoFo Sunday Round Up – Odds and Ends

Vegan MoFo Sunday Round Up – Odds and Ends

Greetings from the much cooler southwestern USA – San Diego. Tonight’s Sunday Round Up is all about good stuff. Let’s get to it!

First up… kitties! Because …kitties!

More kitty love at My Apologies For the Novel …and hot chocolate. Kept that in my pocket until now.

Because kitties bring to mind their undying need to be wild, these mulberries reminded me of my own kitties’ because they are beautiful. A Fruity Life’s mulberries are just as pretty.

Next up is roasting prickly pear fruit. Cats to mulberries to prickly pear.  Don’t miss Vegan Eats and Treats’s Part One of her cactus encounter.

Once you’ve picked your prickly pear, go pick some almonds from your neighborhood bulk aisle and make milk.  Gorgeous photo by Sprouts and Chocolate.

After you have milk the natural inclination is to enjoy it with challah from Triumph Wellness.

Once you have your delish challah, it’s time to enjoy it with your Tempeh Bacon and Leek Quiche. From Vegetarian Snob. Because deep, deep down in all of us, there is a desire for tempeh bacon.

Just because it made me think,  Fuck Yeah Vegan Ice Cream rounds up some great signage.

Finally, this has nothing to do with food, but it is just as beautiful as the foods above, Vaelium 76 has had some great instagram posts.

Announcing the VeganMoFo 2014 Chopped! Champion!

Announcing the VeganMoFo 2014 Chopped! Champion!

It’s time to announce the winner of this year’s VeganMoFo Chopped! competition! Our contestants showed up for a vibrant, well-rounded entree round with Oolong tea, fresh prune plums, spicy jalapeños and every Fraggle’s favorite, the hot-headed radish.

Here’s a listing of our fab contestants and their variety of exciting submissions, in random order:

You can check out all their photos and more on our Chopped! Contestant! Roundup!

Here we go!  After much deliberation on who really got creative and elevated their ingredients, plus much discussion on presentation, perceived taste and the use of those mighty ingredients, our judges (Julia Legume, Dan Reed & Chelsea Hoshi) came to a decision!

Without further adieu, our new VeganMoFo Chopped! Champion is….Emily of the Vegan Needs Sauce tumblr and her Channa Masala with Plums, Radish Salad and Oolong Rice

Our 2014 Winner! Vegan Needs Sauce’s Channa Masala with Plums, Radish Salad and Oolong Rice

Our judges agreed that incorporating all these flavors into a channa masala, which is a dish they already enjoy, was super special, intriguing and seemed quite balanced in terms of flavor combinations, bonus fresh herbs and that lovely tea-infused rice!

Emily wins a special sweet prize from our friends at Chicago Vegan Foods, a Vegan Iron Chef tshirt to show her vegan cookin’ pride, and the coveted title of VEGANMOFO! CHOPPED! CHAMPION!

More from Emily on her dish:

So when they announced the ingredients for the Vegan MoFo Chopped! basket, I knew I had to give it a shot. They are: radish, oolong tea, fresh prune plums, and jalapeno. It took me a little time to mull it over (look, I won’t do well on the real “Chopped”), but I decided to look to Indian cooking for inspiration and make channa masala with some plums in the spicy tomato sauce base, radish salad, and basmati rice cooked with oolong tea.”

Love it!

Big ups to Chicago Vegan Foods for donating! Check out their new mini Dandies for  your autumn treats and upcoming hot cocoa rounds!

Thanks to everyone for entering!!

Pssst, Emily, please leave a comment or tweet to us with your email address, so we can connect ya with CVF and send that shirt! – jess

Vegan MoFo 2014: Freaky Friday Round-Up

Vegan MoFo 2014: Freaky Friday Round-Up

Friday, it’s Friday! Thank god ’cause this was a loooong week. Thankfully, I have MoFo Round-Up duties today, so we can start the weekend off right!

white-russian-lebowskiThe Happy Vegan has the right idea to start off the weekend, Vegan White Russians! Easily my favorite cocktail, I may or may not be The Dude for Halloween. Hey careful man, there’s a beverage here!

BeetSeitan1Allotment2Kitchen is keeping it real with Vegan BBQ Beetroot Seitan Steaks! I took a double take because I thought they were real. I’d love to test one out!

IMG_9152Floral Frosting got my attention with these amazing Espresso-Speculoos Chocolate Chip Shortbread Cookies. What a combo! We Vegans love our Speculoos, don’t we?

2014-09-17-11.25.10This healthy breakfast bowl from Vegan In Berlin caught my eye! It might inspire me put some fruit into my daily oatmeal. Not sure how fruit in my Panda Puffs would go though 🙂

Enjoy your Friday and stay safe!
