Julie’s Original Giveaway

Julie’s Original Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS CLOSED

Today is the day to get your gluten freedom on! I am so pleased to have a giveaway from the great Julie Hasson of Julie’s Original Gluten Free Baking Mixes!

-1You already know of Julie from her hit cookbooks such as Vegan Diner and Vegan Pizza, and she also has a new casserole book coming out this fall. You may have been lucky enough to eat at her Native Bowl food cart in Portland, OR, before she and her husband sold it this past spring to focus on their new baking mix business.

These mixes are a perfect pantry staple for those who are gluten free and those who need to bake up a quick cake for the gluten free friend’s birthday. There are a lot of questionable recipes floating around the internet that can be hit or miss, but with a box of Julie’s Original you’ll know you’re getting consistent quality.

LemonRaspBundtType-1024x682

Her website has a whole recipe section, so don’t think you’re just limited to plain white cake or chocolate brownies with these. You can make a lemon raspberry bundt cake or chocolate cherry almond brownies and many more. Follow the Julie’s Original facebook page to see where she’s sampling and where you can buy a box.

Julie’s Original is offering a box of her gluten free baking mix (white or fudge brownie) to 2 different readers today. To enter, you just need to leave a comment below about which of her recipes you’re looking forward to trying the most. We’ll select two winners at 8 am PDT on September 20th. This giveaway is open to US residents only. You’ve got 24 hours to enter! One entry per person please.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Chewy, Cheeky, Chesty Chia.

Are you surfin’ the chia wave yet?  I know lots of folks have been chewing on chia for years, but I only recently had my first chia pudding.  I dug it.  My lateness to the chia game is crazy, because I’m a big fan of wobbly, chewy things–especially in my beverages.  I am one of the biggest bubble tea cheerleaders, ever.  In the world.

Chia and tapioca shouldn’t really be compared, though.  They’re very different animals.  Or at least, my comparisons shouldn’t be taken too seriously…Boba/tapioca reminds me of candy and desserts, squishy boobs and the age-old adage, “CHEW BEFORE SWALLOW!” Chia, on the other hand is a much smaller and delicate choking concern and more reminiscent of frog eggs than breasts.  I’m not alone in this sentiment either, just read Vegtastic Voyage‘s hilarious experience with her first “chia in kombucha.”  Her story is replete with frog egg pictures, which I’ll be kind enough to leave off of my message today.

Chia is also an insane nutrition power-donkey, and if you get bored with eating it, you can spread it on objects around your house and grow it for novelty!  I wish bubble tea had the same virtues.

From left to rightL Raspberry Passion, Cranberry Lemonade, Cherry Lime and Blackberry Hibiscus

The generous folks at Mamma Chia heard about my recent chia conversion and were nice enough to send me coupons to try each of their four flavors.  These classy drinks are filled with organic juice, organic chia and a little bit of agave.  They’re super-healthy, refreshing, have a bit of protein (4g per serving), omega-3s, and they’re fun to eat or drink (you can’t really drink a beverage you need to chew, and you can’t really eat a drink–so that’s confusing).  After sampling each of these very scientifically in my test kitchen, my favorite flavor, far and away, was Cherry Lime.  It’s tastes like cherry jello and required considerable restraint from me and my lab partner  to keep from adding vodka straight into the bottle.

Mamma Chia wants to spread their chewy, healthy love with you, too. Today we’ll pick three winners;  each of you will win a coupon for a free bottle of Mamma Chia (you pick the flavor), plus another coupon for a buck off of two bottles.

To win, just comment with your best chia alliteration, write about your general love of chia, or if you have any experience incorporating chia with booze, tell me about that.  Winners will be chosen at midnight tonight–East Coast time, so that’s 9PM for you lefties.

The winners are alliteraters Emily comment #18, Candice comment #39 and Beth comment #51.  Please email veganmofoblog at gmail dot com and send us your addresses!

No Gluten this Wednesday.

No Gluten this Wednesday.

Combing through The MoFo for this roundup, really gave me a butt-shot of the vegan-gluten-free fuzzies.  Since seitan is popular with so many vegans, it can be lonely to do without, but it seems there are many people eating this way nowadays, with attics stuffed full of granny’s own delicious recipes.  There’s no loneliness hangin’ with   The Gluten-Free Vegan Family. Sorghum flour’s never sounded so good!  And look what their four year old created…

Black bean and pumpkin taquitos!  Do I spy pomegranate jewels mixed into that guacamole?

Cupcake Punk has rocked out a XgfX pie crust, just in time for those winter gatherings with the family.  Hi Uncle Jack, I love you, want some pie?

I’m into the rustic-ness of this tart, I may just try it with the mound of Asian pears sitting on my counter.

Apparently, baked beans have been hitting the no-gluten-o-meter, both Mitten Machen and Happy Vegan Face are rockin’ ’em today.  So good!  Where the hell is my crock pot?

With collards and sweet potatoes!   I like the way this plate is swinging.

The Fairest Feed was inspired to make some pantry-stash killin’ muesli bars.

Just look at those colors, and why yes those are pistachio nuts.  Thanks for askin’.

Ash recently inspired me with her mosaic of XgfX deliciousness.

I’d be happy with any of this!  And speaking of the happy fuzzies, do you know what good friends Soy Curls can be?  I find that they can be used in lots of places where I used to put seitan. The Elizavegan Page shows how to adapt them to Thai cuisine.  Not only are they tasty, but paired with coconut and spices, they can help fix you up.
