Wednesday Round Up: Faking It!

Wednesday Round Up: Faking It!

I’ve gotta say that I love a good vegan sub, whether it’s mock meat, faux cheese or The Vegg, I’m in. I personally didn’t give up animal products because I didn’t enjoy them so for me being able to chow down on realistic subs for my old fave’s is great, great for my stomach and great for the animals.

Whilst browsing around the MoFo blogroll this evening I came across so many bloggers either using or creating their own meat, egg and cheese subs that it just had to be my round up theme.

Jes from Your Mom’s A Vegan made this delicious looking Buffet “Chicken” Salad using Soy Curls.

Abby Bean from A (Soy) Bean kept it simple with one of my fave’ meat subs, Field Roast Frankfurters, which she paired with baked beans and wedges.

For extra bonus points Abby Bean’s adorbz doggie 89 also makes an appearance! Squeee!

IMG_1479-1

The peeps behind fuckyeahveganpizza posted this mock meat covered awesomeness earlier today and now all I can think about is visiting this all vegan pizzeria in Garden Grove, CA!

Whilst I love store bought mock meats I also adore homemade and today Sal from Alien on Toast has got these on lockdown. She made an amazing looking chicken style seitan roast to go with her roast dinner and now I’m tempted to get my vital wheat gluten out and start whipping up some seitan of my own. At 1:30am!

Continuing down the homemade route Sammy from An Ode to Mungbeans took on the challenge of veganising egg on toast. Using both tofu and The Vegg this creation looks out of this world delicious.

Finally we come to the most inventive of dish in this evening’s faking it game; Luminous Vegans veganised crab strudel made with shiitake mushrooms and cashew cheese. I have nothing to say but wow!

That’s all from me folks, it’s time to hit the hay! Happy MoFoing.

Giveaway – Ms Cupcake Cookbook

Giveaway – Ms Cupcake Cookbook

We have our winners, drumroll please! Congratulations Jenny and megs, we’ll be in touch soon.

Today we have a pretty special worldwide giveaway for you guys. The Ms Cupcake Cookbook has been out in the UK since early this year but it was only released in the US last week. We have two copies to give away so get excited because this beautiful vintage-style cookbook has serious substance.

Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 14.18.05

I’m lucky enough to live just over an hour by train from the Ms Cupcake store in Brixton, South London and I actually started visiting way before the shop opened when Mellissa sold her baked goods from a stall at Greenwich Market. I became a frequent visitor over the years, always hunting down Ms C at vegan fairs and festivals across the country. On a few occasions I even worked for them behind the stall!

Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 15.07.09

I was SO excited when I heard that there was going to be a Ms Cupcake cookbook and I was even more excited when I saw the previews with my own eyes. The woman behind the sweet treats is Canadian born Mellissa Morgan who started her bakery from home after spotting a cupcake shaped gap in the UK market.

Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 15.07.31

The book itself is beautiful, hard-backed and filled with stunning pictures of the staff and shop as well as the bakes themselves. The cookbook gives you a real sense of the bakery itself which I love.

The very first thing I made when I got my hands on a copy of the book were these Jaffa Cakes. If you aren’t British you may not have heard of these traditional biccies (or, in fact, the word biccie!) which are technically classified as a cake but nobody really thinks of them like that.

Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 15.07.48

The recipe turned out wonderfully and whilst I’d intended to give half of the batch away to a friend I ended up scoffing the lot myself. After this success I immediately fired up the oven again and got cracking on the Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I buy these cookies from the Ms Cupcake store and they’re one of my favourite treats so I had high hopes. My husband often jokes that Mellissa should be called Ms Cookie because they’re that good and the recipe certainly wasn’t a disappointment. These are just like the kind from the store!

I’ll stop making y’all jealous with my tales of fantastic baked goods now and get on with telling you how you can win a copy all of your very own. All I need you to do is find a Vegan MoFo blogger who has posted about cake this month. Any cakes will do, cup cakes, layer cakes, raw cakes, gluten free cakes, as long as it’s from a participating blog it’s in so leave a link to the cake filled blog post in your comment.

To enter you just need to leave a comment below with your answer by 11pm BST tomorrow. Please make sure to include a valid e-mail address so that we can get in contact with you if you win. The two winners will be randomly selected and announced after the giveaway has ended. This competition is open worldwide.

Monday Round Up : Dining out in style

Monday Round Up : Dining out in style

So many of us spend the month of MoFo in our kitchens working away at our complex and wonderful themes but these posts reminded me that we all need take a day, or even just an afternoon, off now and then. These bloggers have been showing us the wonderful food they’ve been eating outside their kitchens.

Ashley from A.Cook In The Making is blogging about orange food this week and she started off with this beautiful Acorn Squash Curry with Tofu from Lanna Thai Diner in Massachusetts.

acorn-squash-curry

Renée from Veganza spent a wonderful long weekend hanging out with friends and they ate a tonne of delicious looking food from Kuan Yin Teahouse. I am particularly enamoured by the faux fish bento on the top left.

9706454829_aeb2837568

Linda over at The Lentil Institution picked up these wonderful looking desserts from Mister Nice Guy’s in Melbourne. The Chocolate Babka is making me wanna hop on a plane to Australia!

mrniceguy_babka_scroll0913_web

Abby Bean from A (soy) Bean made me super jealous today by posting about somewhere I have been dying to visit for a really long time, NYC’s Cinnamon Snail Food Truck. This sandwich looks right up my street and I definitely wont be missing them next time I end up in NYC.

IMG_1619

In England dropscone picked up a delicious juice from her local market, I’m glad it’s still summery enough for this where she is because it’s pretty Autumnal down here already.

zee-juice-refreshing-mint-drink

Caroline from Tea & Sympatico is focussing on Manchester’s Northern Quarter this MoFo and today she blogged about a falafel wrap from new vegan chain, Go Falafel. Sometimes the classics are the best right?

Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 21.51.58

April’s blog, The Travelling Austin Vegan, has been taken over by hedgehogs this month! Whoa! Today they told us all about the great pizza they picked up from Mamma’s Pizza in Toronto.

9632629158_77199a8dd2_zLast but by no means least the awesome peeps at Rabbit Food Grocery in Austin have been taking part in the taco cleanse and today they posted this brilliance from their friends at Sweet Ritual, Choco Dessert Tacos. Mind. Officially. Blown.

Giveaway – Goody Good Stuff

Giveaway – Goody Good Stuff

We have our winners! Congratulations Babette and Rachael, we’ll be in contact soon.

You can tell that we’re well and truly into the spirit of MoFo when we start throwing out prizes left right and centre and today we have our very first. This giveaway comes all the way from UK based vegetarian company Goody Good Stuff whose sweets I just happen to love.

Goody Good Stuff’s gummy sweets are made without artificial colours or flavours and are gluten and nut free.  We have two giant multi bags each containing 32 little packs of sweets to give away today and the competition is open to anyone worldwide. I have to admit to being a little jealous because this bag includes my favourite sour cherry sweets which you can’t even buy in individual packets yet!

-1

As Goody Good Stuff are based in England I thought I’d give this competition a fun little English twist!

To enter you just need to name one English blogger taking part in Vegan MoFo this year. Naming my blog is cheating! Leave your answer in the comments below by 4pm BST tomorrow. Please make sure to include a valid e-mail address so that we can get in contact with you. The winner will be randomly selected and announced after the giveaway has ended. This competition is open worldwide.

These Are a Few of My Favourite Themes.

These Are a Few of My Favourite Themes.

Happy first full day of MoFo everyone! Okay, for the people aiming to blog every single day during September this is technically day two but for round up purposes I’m calling it the first day & there’s nothing you can do about it!

As is usual for a Monday morning (um, not really) I got My Favourite Things stuck in my head and then it hit me, favourite themes! What a perfect way to kick off the MoFo round ups. There are no raindrops on roses or cream coloured ponies here but there are some pretty fun themes and probably, knowing vegans, some whiskers on kittens!

Because I have my very own obsession with Mac & Cheese the first theme to jump out at me was Vegan Yack Attack’s Born To Mac with accompanying epic graphic.
9648258175_241c690482Throughout the month Jackie will be posting mac recipes and, if the mouthwatering pictures in her intro post are anything to go by, I can’t freaking wait.

On the subject of epic graphics this one made me fall head over heels in love with Cadry from Cadry’s Kitchen.

Cadry_McFly_Poster-1024x682

Cadry’s Back to the Future themed MoFo will see her using the flax capacitor (see what she did there?!!) to cruise back through space and time and to feast upon meals from other periods of her life. It’s gonna be rad, check it!

Continuing with our tour of US themes my fellow VeganMoFo team mate, Amey, from Vegan Eats & Treats is running with a Noshtalgia theme. She’ll be focussing on re-creating foods that remind her of people she loves.

noshtalgia

I’m already thoroughly enjoying reading the stories Amey’s sharing from her childhood and I don’t mind admitting that this theme totally gives me the warm and fuzzies.

If you’d care to follow me to Canada you’ll see that Crystal and Trevor from Naked Vegan Lunch are going to be imagining that the Seinfeld world was vegan. Yup, you read that right! Seinfeld MoFo!

seinfeld_header

This month we’ll see the blogging duo taking a virtual journey around Manhattan in the 90’s and I for one am excited to see what comes outa their kitchen.

Hopping across the Atlantic ocean to the UK we’ll find Caitlin from The Vegan Word who’ll be blogging with the theme Suitable For (non) Vegans.

Suitable-for-non-vegans

This theme will see Caitlin focussing on showcasing awesome dishes that you can use to introduce the non-vegans in your life to vegan food. Such a great idea and I bet it’ll be helpful for a tonne of people.

If we continue onward into Western Europe we’ll find Mihl from seitan is my motor veganising the A – Z of Classic German Desserts.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve been a big fan of Mihl’s writing and recipes (not to mention photography) for longer than I can remember and her MoFo theme is guaranteed to make you wanna get into your kitchen, pull out all of your flours and get baking.

There are so many other awesome themes going on out there in MoFo land, from day of the week themes to month long epics. Sadly we can’t mention them all but do leave your favourites in the comments so that we can check ’em out.

Official Daily Themes & Blogging Prompts.

Official Daily Themes & Blogging Prompts.

Hey y’all! Can you believe it’s only a week until Vegan MoFo 2013 begins? Colour me excited! (I’m British, that ‘u’ is staying, get used to it!)

I was lucky enough to attend Vida Vegan Con in Portland this spring and one of my favourite classes was the Vegan MoFo workshop run by fellow volunteers Kittee, Amey & Mo. I loved the tips these MoFo veterans shared for getting involved in and surviving Vegan MoFo. For a lot of us the idea that MoFo has to be about elaborate cooking projects is enough to stop us signing up and I don’t mind admitting that I’ve suffered from MoFo Burnout™ on more than one occasion. But, never fear, our ideas are here! During the workshop we brainstormed fun daily themes that you guys can use all of, some of, or, y’know, none of. It’s up to you! The official Vegan MoFo 2013 Daily Themes are…

Mac-and-Cheese Monday – This is pretty self explanatory and a theme I’m personally running with

TV Tuesday – Eat and Watch, cook a meal featured in your favourite movie or TV show.

Work With it Wednesday – Focussing on a food you don’t love and learning to love, or at least tolerate, it.

Thankful Thursday – Focussing on the positive and giving to others. Maybe you could bake some cookies to thank a friend, teacher or neighbour?

Freaky Friday – Trade with a fellow blogger for the day.

Retro Saturday – Dress up and veganise your favourite retro dishes.

Sleepy Sundays – Your favourite breakfast, brunch and lazin’ in bed snacks. This is another one that I’ll definitely be taking part in!

I’d also like to share ALL of the brainstorming ideas we came up with in the workshop so that you too can laugh about Bathtub Tuesday or run with Fry-day!

Monday – Mock Meat Monday, Mom’s Meals, Metal Monday, Munchie Monday, Muffin Monday, Manic Monday.

Tuesday – Taco Tuesday, Bathtub Tuesday, Tomato Tuesday.

Wednesday – White Flour Wednesday.

Thursday – Thirsty Thursday, Thursday Treats.

Friday – Fry-day, Fruity Friday, Far-mar Friday, Farty Friday (yes, we are adults), Fermented Friday, Fave Film Friday.

Saturday – Sprouty Saturday, Sautéed Saturday, Sausage Saturday, Spousal Saturday, Saucy Saturday.

Sunday – Sweetie Sunday, Sundae, Soul Food Sunday, Sassy Sunday, Spicy Sunday, Small Town Sunday, Special Sunday.

The awesome Erika at Sews Before Bros wrote a great summary of the workshop right here if you’d like to read more about it.

This year the MoFo team (with a little help from our Twitter followers) have also come up with 30 blogging prompts that you can use if you’re dealing with a case of writer’s block. Again you can use some, all, or none of these.

  • Your Origin Story (what led you to become vegan?)
  • Share your first experience cooking with tofu.

  • Do a cookbook challenge! Throw cookbook names into a hat, use a random number generator to pick a page and make whatever comes up.
  • Your favourite vegan food pairings (Yes, we kinda pinched this one from Vegetarian Times!)
  • Talk about your favourite place to buy vegetables.
  • Your ultimate cooking playlist.
  • What’s your killer dish when you’re cooking for non-vegans?

If you haven’t signed up for MoFo yet I hope that these prompts might inspire you to do so – you have until August 28th! The sign up form’s right here. Go on, you know you want to!

If you have signed up but are already freaking out about how much work it’s going to be hopefully this post will help you chill out a bit! We understand that it can be hard, or downright impossible, to keep up with cooking project after elaborate cooking project for a whole month because we MoFo too. Hopefully the daily MoFo Workshop themes, and prompt questions alongside Katie’s post about MoFoing On The Go will make it all seem considerably less daunting and more fun. Roll on September!

We have our two lucky winners, they’re Noreen who said “Probably soy milk or tofu i’m not sure which I tried first” and Carmen who said “I remember buying Vegan Vittles about a year or so after becoming vegan. Congrat’s Noreen & Carmen, don’t forget to check your e-mails!

I don’t know about you but Vegetarian Shoes have been one of my favourite companies ever since I first went veggie. They happen to be located just around the corner from me in Brighton and their Airseal 14-eye boots were the first intentionally vegan shoes I ever bought.

Sunday Round Up – What’s Your Flava?!

Sunday Round Up – What’s Your Flava?!

Yeah, that title was inspired by a gross Craig David song. It’s Sunday night, I’ve eaten a lot of sweets, my brain has clearly turned to mush! I’m still here with your Sunday night round up though and I have some delicious lookin’ stuff lined up!

Firstly I need a slice of Tiffany’s Apple Pie. Stat. Just look at that perfect crust and those beautiful apples.

If nobody’s willing to bring me pie I’d happily take one of these yummy looking Raw Caramel-Fudge Brownies from Vegan Gourmet Caravan instead!

As you can probably tell I really don’t need any more sugar right now but if one of the Vegan Twix bars The Laziest Vegans blogged about appeared in front of me I wouldn’t turn it down!

If you’d like your sweet treat on the fancy side these Peanut Butter & Sambal Wontons with Chocolate Sauce from Olives For Dinner would be right up your street. Just look at them! Perfection.

Not really in the mood for making your own dessert today? Well, I can’t blame ya, it is Sunday after all! If, like Jess Sconé, you’re stuck in NYC because of the impending storm you can head out (maybe…are you allowed to go out if there’s a storm coming?) and get a delicious doughnut from DunWell. If not, well, whip up a mug brownie and get settled in for the night!

That concludes my Sunday round-up, I hope you’ve all had a great weekend and I hope to see ya’ll in the blogosphere tomorrow!
