Really Big News: VeganMoFo Returns September 2013!

Hello, hello! In case you haven’t heard, VeganMoFo is coming at ya this very September…next month!

That’s right, you now have just under a month to get brainstorming and restock your spices and take part in the one and only vegan blogging extravaganza that is the Vegan Month of Food.

I saw this mug at a thrift store the other day and you know what, Garfield’s right: It’s not pretty, it’s pretty fantastic. And VeganMoFo clearly calls for vegan lasagana.

So, start thinking themes (or not, because that’s totally a fun un-theme) stay tuned right here, the VeganMoFo facebook, Instagram, Twitter and VeganMoFo room on the PPK boards for the official blog signup, RSS Feed files, contests, and the snazzy new 2013 logos and banners for your own blogs.  And hashtag, of course.

More to come!

Happy blogging mania ahead!

Sunday MoFo Round-Up: I Want It All

Sunday MoFo Round-Up: I Want It All

Greetings, MoFos. Sundays are lovely. I’ve made waffles and raked leaves, and we drove out to one of the last island farmers’ markets of the year. There is a big sheepdog to my right and a nerdy boyfriend organizing his Magic The Gathering cards to my left. We are considering going to a pumpkin patch tomorrow. Basically, I’m all cozy and I hope you are too, because we are so close to finishing and conquering the wonderful Vegan Month of Food. Let’s take a look at what stood out today.

If you’ve been vegan for any length of time, you’ve probably already experienced the phenomenon that is cheese-less pizza appreciation. Suddenly, even the idea of putting Daiya on your pizza is kind of weird, considering how much it takes over the other ingredients’ flavours. I would happily eat up this caramelized onion and squash pizza from I Eat Grains any day.

What’s in Robin Robertson’s slow-cooker? should be a regular feature in the soon-to-be-a-reality vegan tabloids. Today, it’s seitan posole.

I am absolutely loving think. care. act.’s tour of veganized regional Germany. Today? Northern Germany’s intriguing Pears, Beans, and “Bacon”.

Gimme this breakfast.

WHAT! Dandies bars from Three and a Half Vegans. Homemade vegan chocolate bars in your pie hole.

I just started testing for Terry Hope Romero’s upcoming world vegan food cookbook, and it is absolutely amazing, since Viva Vegan is one of my favourite cookbooks of all time. Proving its awesomeness are these beautiful arepas sandwiching yellow chili grilled mushrooms and fruit slaw from Cupcake Kitteh.

No plans for this (or next) Sunday night? Take a cue from Amy Zucchini and throw yourself a sushi rollin’ party.

Have a marvellous week!

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Sunday Feasting: A Round-Up of Dreams

Hi guys, Gabrielle here. I’m starving. Give me all of your foods! No, seriously. My google reader has me seriously craving a dream feast made up of MoFoers’ recipes. Grab a snack and join me as we imagine-eat our way through this thing of beauty.

But! Before we proceed, make sure your nails are painted teal, okay? It’s crucial! It just happens to be National Feral Cat day. Don’t let the national thing turn you away, non-Americans, feral cats are everywhere, awareness is always a great thing, and your nails will be teal.

I think most vegans have made up a meal out of side dishes at a restaurant before, and to be honest, I don’t mind it one bit! Especially if something like this curry-roasted cauliflower from The Urban Vegan is on the menu.

That pretty little squash on my counter has its future determined: delicata squash circles.

Moving on to mains, the Crabby Crafter (adorable blog name!)’s green and white bean casserole with spicy sweet potato wedges looks just dazzling.

I have no self-control when it comes to Ethiopian food—injera gut be dammed. I would eat the hell out of this plate of Aussie-Ethiopian plate from Meet the Wikos.

Vegan MoFo’s own Luciana only ate half of this breakfast burrito! If I didn’t love her so much after meeting her at Vida Vegan Con, I would mock her dainty appetite (and inexplicable affinity for chia kombucha).

Next we’ll zip over to Stuttgart, Germany, where we will munch on these amazing Italian vegan gelato “conos” with Vegan Miam.

Forgetting my theme (if there ever was one) let’s get distracted by Jojo’s adorable Football Food Sunday (she’s a Brit who is watching American football! Hilarious!), featuring avocado fries, barbecue tofu, and loaded potato skins. Give me this spread for a (hockey) game any day.

Oh right, vegans eat salad! How about this gorgeously plated gnocchi potato salad with green beans and quinoa?

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love mushrooms—the more exotic the funghi the better. So I’m pretty stoked on Veg-am’s mushroom instalments for 1 food 5 ways: here is the herbed polenta cups with mushroom onion stuffing.

Finally, I will leave you as I pop a hundred of these peanut butter thumbprint cookies into my mouth from a Toronto farmers’ market via Until We Eat Again.

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

Monday Round-Up: Happy Vegan Thanksgiving, Canadians!

MoFos! I drive all of my American friends up the wall talking about Canadian Thanksgiving—one of my favourite holidays—but they’re just jealous that we don’t have to wait until November to get our Tofurky on. Since I’m currently embarking on an amazing and terrifying house-sitting gig in Victoria, BC, I’ll probably be having toast for dinner, so we can all be jealous of the following Canadian Thanksgiving dishes perfect for channelling your inner hoser.

While those of us out on the West Coast on getting reacquainted with our closest friend—the rain—lucky Nicole in sunny Southern Ontario is taking gorgeous outside shots of these birthday lemon tarts over at at A Dash of Compassion.

I’m a little out of sorts that my Thanksgiving weekend didn’t kick off with these perfect pumpkin waffles from you can’t eat the air!

Is there anything better than apple pie? Evidently, yes, there is apple pie CAKE.

Not only did Jennifer at It Ain’t Meat, Babe discuss vegan Thanksgiving celebrations with on Canada’s prestigious CBC radio, she also found the time to suggest we try her Sweet Potato Bread Pudding. I’ll take advice from anyone with Dylan-inspired blog name.

You’ve seen Bryanna Clark Grogan’s World Vegan Feast making its rounds around the MoFo-sphere, so clearly we knew BCG wouldn’t leave us hanging on Thanksgiving. Try her Mediterranean mashed potatoes, and don’t fret if you find yourself eating them straight out of the pot.

I’m patriotically practising my French by reading Vegan à Montréal, and we all know that Les Français are masters of the crêpe, but it looks as though the Québécois can also hold their own with a Swiss-style chickpea omelet.

Finally, MeShell, I am begging you to invite me to your Thanksgiving next year. Her spread includes cornbread muffins, onion gravy, smashed garlicky potatoes, grapefruit black pepper cranberry Sauce (fancypants!), stuffing in acorn squash, salads, pies, lentil loaves, and gosh, probably more. I’m met that girl. She’s a wizard. And her partner made a freaking pumpkin cheesecake!

Congrats on ten days of blogging, MoFos!

VeganMoFo Thurs. Roundup: A Match Made in the Kitchen

VeganMoFo Thurs. Roundup: A Match Made in the Kitchen

Howdy MoFoing Fiends!

VeganMoFo 2011 is off to a great start, full of so many tasty dishes and lots of lovely comments floating around the blogosphere.  As I make my way through each and every post (Ha!), I can’t help but notice that there are some really delightful flavor combinations coming out of your kitchens.   Here are a few that caught the attention of my (somewhat American) palate.

Lemon and Blueberry

Lemon Pound Cake with Blueberry Topping

The marriage of tart and sweet happening over at Andrea’s Easy Vegan Cooking might just be the best ever.  Andrea sure is lucky to have a daughter-in-law that makes such tasty cakes.

Chocolate and Peanut Butter

A Colossal Peanut Butter Cup?  ‘Nuff said, really.  Check out Kristen’s ‘how to’ over at Sugar Skull.

Maple and Pecan

Maple Pecan Oat Scones

Although I’ve never met a scone I didn’t like, Char’s sound particularly delicious.  It must be the combination of maple and pecan.  With the step-by-step photos she provides, I’m wondering why I’m sitting here writing this post instead of making these beauts.

Apple and Cinnamon

Apple Cinnamon Paczki

Alex over at Cloudy with a Chance of Vegan Meatballs made Paczki, a Polish fried dessert, filled in this case with both an apple cinnamon mixture and cream.  Man these look good!

Avocado and Lime

Southwestern Cobb Salad

MoFo Roundup Crew’s very own Mo is at it again, creating another dish that I want to dive into headfirst.  There are so many great flavor combinations in this Southwestern Cobb Salad, avocado and lime being one.

Tomato and Parsley

Ful Mudamms

Nada over at One Arab Vegan gives us the rundown on Ful Mudamms, an Egyptian bean salad consisting of several ingredients including, you guessed it, tomato and parsley.  The entire dish sounds so fresh and delicious, I wish I had a bowl in front of my right now!

Did I leave out your favorite flavor combination?  Tell me about it below!

Veganmofo Tuesday Roundup- What I wish I was eating today

Veganmofo Tuesday Roundup- What I wish I was eating today

Even though today is National Taco Day, it seems like everyone in the mofoverse is blogging about pizza, pancakes, beer, and soup. I think most people need a little comfort food in October, I know I’ve been searching everywhere for my arm warmers and thinking about hot chocolate. Today I wish I could have sat at home and cuddled up with the hounds. Then I would have invited over people from the internet to cook for me. I’d start my day with Oh Lady Cakes Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Rolls they look so warm and sweet. Then for lunch I would make an appointment with Dr. Simpson to come and prepare me Sweet ‘n Sour Cashews & Chickpea nuggets because ordering in on a day when you don’t want to leave the house always gets me thinking of Chinese takeout and this meal looks just about right.Let’s get serious, since this is a fantasy, dinner would really take an entire team and it would have to be Southern style cooking. I’d love to try mollyjades’s Chicken-Fried Chickpea Cutlets. They would work great with a delicious side of Mac and Cheese, in this case Cooking with Color‘s re-creation of the Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook’s fabulous sounding recipe.Add to that my favorite winter green, Brussels sprouts, and you have got yourself a serious meal. Jessy cooked up some of Joni’s garlic and mustard roasted brussel sprouts and they would really be the perfect compliment here. After all this I would need something sweet but also small to these tiny Coconut Lime Cheesecakes by Vegan Culinary Crusade would fit the menu perfectly. After that, I would probably fall into a deep food coma, but it would be totally worth it.

The Vegan Vine Wine Giveaway!

The Vegan Vine Wine Giveaway!

We have a winner! Cristy, who said: “I haven’t cooked with wine in a long time. Since I prefer white wine, I’d choose the Sauvignon Blanc and use it in a light pasta sauce of some sort. Adding to risotto does sound delicious! Splash for the food, glass for me… splash for the food, glass for me… Splash for me, splash for me…”

Thanks for playing everyone!

Today’s giveaway is a $30 gift certificate from The Vegan Vine. Yes, my friends, it’s wine country! The Vegan Vine is a family-owned and certified sustainable winery located on the coast of central California. They refine their wines without the use of any animal products. Their whimsical packaging is reason enough to need a bottle in your kitchen today!

Even if you’re not the type of person who likes to talk about the “legs” on a glass of Cabernet, or the citrus undertones of a Chardonnay, wine is a powerful ingredient for any vegan chef. Cooking with a splash (or a glass) adds depth and nuance to stews, sauces and marinades, taking dishes from “I could make that” to “How did you make this?”

Some traditional dishes made with wine are picatta and boeuf bourguignon, which both translate beautifully to plant-based recipes. I always finish off risotto with some white wine. But the question is: How do you cook with wine? To enter this contest, check out the Vegan Vine website, then tell us which of their wines you would use to cook one of your favorite dishes. Of course you’d have to enjoy a glass alongside your meal, too. Or perhaps even while you’re cooking!

The winner will be picked at random by 8 PM EST tonight, October 4th, 2011. This contest is US only. Please don’t forget to fill in your email address, so that we can contact you if you’re the winner. Good luck!

Added bonus: Best use of wine in MoFo so far has to go to Vegans Eat Pencil Shavings, for this Cabarnet Dessert Caviar.

Cabernet Dessert Caviar

And don’t miss the SuperVegan review of a the Vegan Vine tasting at Candle 79.

Panda With Cookie Giveaway!

Panda With Cookie Giveaway!

This summer at Vida Vegan Con I had the pleasure of finally getting to meet the woman behind Panda with Cookie and check out her adorable creations in real life, they are even cuter in person! She also told me to check out the Flavor Spot in Portland where I got a vegan breakfast sausage and maple syrup wrapped in a waffle so she will always have a special place in my heart for that!

Lisa is doing a fabulous Tofu Pirate Set giveaway for one lucky person to celebrate veganmofo! The winner will get their very own handmade tofu pirate plush

and will get to learn all about tofu pirate’s rollicking excursions in the Tofu Pirate Comic Adventure Zine of Fun where Tofu pirate has 4 mini adventures with various friends.

“Tofu Pirate in Existential Crisis” and “Tofu Pirate Memories” will make you laugh and cry and think. And mostly laugh. Guest appearances by old friends Mushroom Pirate, Tempeh Pirate and more!

To enter all you have to do is have an adventure of your own traveling to Panda’s etsy site and pick out your favorite item. Then come back here and let us all know what it is in the comments. The contest is open to anyone in the world with an address and I will pick a random winner by the stroke of midnight (CST) tonight! Please don’t forget to leave your email address.

Thursday Roundup – Pizza, Dumplings, and Other Doughy Things

Thursday Roundup – Pizza, Dumplings, and Other Doughy Things

With a little more than a week left, there is still lots of MoFo deliciousness. Lots of bloggers are featuring pizza, sandwiches, and other creative ways to use dough. I’ll eat pretty much any (vegan) thing if you stick it on crust or baked in a pie.

Vegtastic Voyage shares a pretty amazing veggie calzone with us, and In-A-Gadda-Da Vegan orders up a wonderful cheeseless pizza piled high with veggies.

Calzone

Meanwhile, Amey over at Vegan Eats & Treats whips up a beautiful tomato pie in a cornmeal crust.

I’ve yet to make any of the recipes from Vegan Soul Kitchen, but I really want to try the BBQ Tempeh Sandwich with coleslaw that is featured over at Cooking Vegan With Soul.

bbqtempeh

Columbus Vegan whips up jackfruit carnitas and stuffs them into a lovely, cheesy chimichanga, and Veg Chef-to-be whips up some homemade arepas stuffed with black beans.

You’ll want to save room for dessert, though! Dandelion bakes up some tasty and sweet apple dumplings, a perfect ending to any fall meal.

appledumpling

That’s it for now. With a little over a week left, I can’t wait to see what everyone cooks up as MoFo wraps up!

-Luciana-

Tooooooooosday

Tooooooooosday

I’ll be honest with you, MoFoers: I kind of thought Tuesday might be a bum day to wrap up. I know; it’s judgmental and unfair of me, but I’m an imperfect person. However! I was clearly wrong about Tuesdays, since the MoFoers keep churning out amazing recipes, photos, and writing. Keep it up!

Speaking of amazing, check out this Seitan En Croute from Joni at Just The Food. I’d type more about it, but I’m too busy licking my screen.EnCroute

Rose at Dandelion is taking the tomato-soup-n-grilled-cheeze concept and fancifying it with cheeze croutons and basil. Megan at Down Home Vegan is cooking up some Minnesota Hotdish (including recent vegan culinary craze ingredient: tater tots!) from a family recipe. The Carnal Vegan is cooking up chiogga beets, which I know I’ve always been curious about. They’re pretty!

Over at Happy Vegan Face, Jessy is doing up one of my favorite kinds of things: delicious food from ingredients I probably have in my pantry! In this case, it’s lentil balls, and they look delicious. Claryn from Hell Yeah It’s Vegan whipped up some sparkly, melty, chocolate peppermint cookies that are making me drool as I type. Naomi Rose is killing it with her pumpkin pie recipe (seasonal and delicious!) for The Gluttonous Vegan.

Bex from How To Feed A Vegan lays some smackdown on “happy” and organic meat by appealing to the olive lover in each of us. Andy from In My Vegan Life takes on a personal cookbook challenge of her own, with delicious results. Finally, The Lazy Smurf’s Guide To Life takes a road trip to the organic farm and comes home to whip up some absolutely stunning gumbo! 4025855333_d028c0564a
